Purpose of the Roundtable
The Health Literacy Roundtable presents an opportunity to continue the discussions from the 2009 Roundtable for the development of a health literacy strategy for BC. Through participatory discussion, the focus will be on identifying concrete steps to move the health literacy agenda forward, identifying ways to build on existing strengths and actions and developing a consensus on approaches to support a strategy for BC.
Since the 2009 Roundtable, a draft Vision and Strategy have been developed by a Planning Committee of over 20 individuals representing the federal and provincial governments, the health and education sectors, private sector and a range of non-government organizations.
The 2010 Roundtable will continue to build on this initial work.
Goals
The Planning Committee has identified three core Goals for the Roundtable:
- A shared vision for health literacy
- Support for a health literacy strategy for B.C.
- A commitment to put the strategy into practice
Format
The Roundtable will incorporate an Appreciative Inquiry model to maintain a focus on what works and to build upon the best of what participants can bring through a collaborative approach, positive support and knowledge sharing through large group discussion and a small working group process.
Who Will Be Attending
The Roundtable is being limited to 50 participants to ensure a rich exchange of knowledge and ideas.
Participation will include representation from:
- federal and provincial governments
- regional health authorities
- the education sector
- leading health and social service related non-government
organizations - First Nations
- immigrant service agencies
- leaders in health literacy policy, research and advocacy.
