Belize Field School

Study in Belize in Summer 2012!

Earn 9 Douglas College credits in just 8 weeks with courses taught by Douglas College and Galen University (Belize) instructors:

  • Anthropology 150 - Mayan Pre-History - Sherry Gibbs (3 credits)
  • Geography 1190 - Regional Geography of Latin America - Michael McPhee (3 credits)
  • Sociology 1155 - Social Issues - Siobhan Ashe (3 credits)

Program Dates: May 1 - June 24, 2012

You will be attending classes at Douglas College for the first three weeks, followed by five weeks of study in Belize, based at Galen University.

The program focuses on the study of the cultural and physical landscapes of Latin America, Mayan culture and histroy, conservation of regional landscapes and current social issues.

From cave exploration and jungle camping to workshops with community leaders, you will gain a better understanding of the goals, circumstances, challenges and opportunities connected with achieving sustainable development in Latin America, with a special emphasis on Belize.

The program concludes on the sandy shoes of the Caribbean Sea, where you will be able to dive, snorkel, swim and kayak at your leisure.

Program Fee: approximately $3000 (to be confirmed)

  • includes these items and services for the Belize portion: tuition for Galen University course, student visa, airport transfers, all accommodations, most meals, program field trips and excursions, and travel medical insurance
  • does not include passport application, tuition for Douglas College courses, airfare, some meals, recommended vaccinations and/or medicines, airport transfers in Vancouver or personal expenses

Program Application and Payment Information:

  • Download a program application form.
  • A $500 deposit is due at the time of application (cash, cheque made out to "Douglas College", VISA, MasterCard accepted).

Deadlines:

  • Early-bird application ($100 off): Friday, February 10, 2012 at 4pm
  • Final application:  Thursday, April 5, 2012
  • Tuition and other student fees payment:  Late March / Early April 2012
  • Airfare booking and payment: Early April 2012
  • Program Fee payment: Friday, April 13, 2012 before 4pm

Student Loan applicable!

Students who are on a Student Loan for the Winter 2012 semester can apply to extend their loan for the purposes of attending this field school. Please visit the Financial Aid Office for more information.

Not a Douglas College student?  No problem!

Students registered at other Canadian post-secondary institutions are welcome to apply for this trip!

Make your application for Admission to Douglas College before March 2012. For information, please go to How to apply.

Official transcript from current institution is required as part of Admission application.

Admission application fee: $30 (domestic students) / $100 (international students).

After admission, you can register in late March/early April 2012 for our program by going to douglascollege.ca/application-services.
