What is the Cultural Connections Program?
The Cultural Connections Program is an exciting student-powered program that is designed to:
- welcome new international students and community students studying English as a Second Language to Douglas College by providing them with a source of friendly support and guidance throughout the semester
- offer returning students the opportunity to meet, interact with, mentor and learn from new students from around the world
- build a vibrant international learning community on campus
How does the program work?
International students and community students studying English as a Second Language who are new to Douglas College (New Students) are paired with returning Canadian or international students studying academic courses (Peer Mentors).
Throughout the semester, pairs keep in contact by phone or email at least once a week and meet in person at least once a month. Contact time is spent on discussing and finding ways to help resolve any questions, concerns and issues the New Student may have, getting to know one another and doing activities of mutual interest.
What does the program involve?
Participating pairs are expected to fulfill the following components (minimum) per semester:
- attend the Meet & Connect Social held during the first week of classes
- complete and submit a progress report form
Program-wide activities/events are initiated and organized by the Coordinator of the Cultural Connections Program.
How much time will it take?
The time commitment is 4 hours a month.
Why get involved?
The Cultural Connections Program not only helps international and community students studying at Douglas College for the first time make a smooth transition to their new life here, but the program enhances the college experience of all participants by creating opportunities to develop international friendships, learn and experience different ways of thinking and communicating and have fun building a campus community that embraces international exchange, interaction and learning.
Program participants also receive the following rewards:
- A Certificate of Participation signed by the Centre for International Education to recognize the fulfillment of Cultural Connections Program requirements
- Most activies organized by the program are Free or have been discounted.
- Peer Mentors will also receive a reference letter, upon request, outlining their contribution to the program
