Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SIFT)
In 1998, Douglas College and the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SIFT) launched an innovative dual-degree program to prepare professionals in the field of financial management and capital markets, with the goal of helping to meet the expected demand for highly trained individuals in finance.
Students complete 32 credits of English and an additional 180 program courses in both Chinese and English. Students can earn the SIFT Bachelor of Economics and the Douglas College Diploma in Financial Services and Management, or the Douglas College Bachelor of Business Administration.
This is a joint teaching program. Over the years, Douglas College has sent 25 professors to teach courses at SIFT. In addition, 31 SIFT professors have undergone a professional development program at Douglas College. SIFT professors study Canadian approaches to instructional design, critical thinking, as well as reviewing specific course content with Douglas College faculty. There are approximately 500 full-time students currently in the program. Most BBA graduates secure employment in their field within six months of graduation. Others opt for further graduate studies.
This dual-degree program was awarded second prize for Best International Program from the Shanghai Education Commission, and Outstanding Program in International Education Award from the Canadian Bureau for International Education. Graduates report that the dual-degree program provides them with an important competitive advantage in the labour market.
