Counselling Services

The help and understanding counsellors can provide can help you enjoy your studies and ease the pressures of College life. Counsellors can assist you with career planning, understanding your rights and responsibilities, and managing your personal challenges. See details below.

NOTE:  Information students share with Counsellors is considered confidential, unless the Counsellor determines that there is an imminent risk of danger to human life.  In such situations Counsellors are required by law to release information as appropriate.  Student may wish to allow Counsellors to release personal information in some circumstances.

Career Counselling

Brief group and individual vocational testing and career conselling is available to registered Douglas College students. Short one session career planning consultations may be available at times for individuals who are not currently registered but who are considering coming to Douglas. Please contact Counselling reception at the New Westminster and David Lam Campus to arrange appointments. (New Westminster 604-527-5486 and David Lam 604-777-6185)

Short-term Personal Counselling

  • Learn to recognize emotional distress and develop coping strategies
  • Support during relationship or family difficulties
  • Managing grief and loss
  • Managing personal stressors
  • Referral to community agencies as appropriate

Student Advocacy

  • Understand your rights and responsibilities according to college policy
  • Help you consider your options and choose a course of action when considering exemptions to College policies, grade appeals, appeals of educational decisions and other complaints

Instructional Services

HUMD Credit Courses

College counsellors may instruct day and evening Human Development credit courses in some semesters.  These may include the following courses: HUMD 1142 (seven week) and 1147 (fourteen week). HUMD 0130 (fourteen week) combines Career Explorations and topics related to Personal Development.  HUMD 1100 focuses exclusively on topics related to personal development, and HUMD 1152 is focuses on developing skills in Interpersonal Relationships/Communications.  See the College calendar for details.

Student Success Workshops

Counsellors may offer non-credit  workshops for registered students that are designed to promote personal growth and student success.  Please check with Counselling Services at either campus for a schedule of workshops available each semester.  Students who prefer to speak with counsellors individually may contact Counselling reception at either campus to arrange appointments (New West 604-527-5486 David Lam 604-777-6185)
