Political Science

"Politics is the art of the possible."
-- Otto Von Bismark, Prussian politician

"Our object in the construction of the state is the greatest happiness of the whole, and not that of any one class."
-- Plato, philosopher

Why Study Political Science?

Are you interested in how politics affects the daily lives of citizens at the local, national, and international levels?

Political science allows you to explore how countries are governed around the world and gives you a framework for understanding Canada's complex role and place in a constantly changing global network and environment.

Political scientists explore political systems, how they evolve, compete and interact -- and how those systems impact all of us and how we can impact them.

Political science is a large, dynamic field that evolves as quickly as today's news and events. It delves into ideologies and history, economic and military systems, journalism and mass communications, international organizations and multinational companies, political leadership, psychology and sociology.

Why study it? Political science develops critical-thinking skills to make sense of our changing world. You explore the complex realities -- not the simplistic explanations -- behind actions affecting us all. You'll participate in research, discussions and analysis.

Studying politics and government helps you better understand laws and political institutions, and forges critically engaged and socially responsible citizens.

By choosing a major in political science at university, you can prepare for careers in government, administration, journalism, communications, education, law, foreign service, and international business. The department's elective courses provide students valuable insights and analytical skills that compliment other fields of study.

University Transfer

Our political science faculty offer expertise in Canadian government and politics, international relations, political theory, politics and ethics, comparative politics, and American politics. We offer university transfer courses at the first- and second-year level. All the department's courses transfer for credit at the BC research universities (UBC, SFU, UVic, and UNBC).
