Physics

"Physicists are the Peter Pans of the human race. They never grow up, they keep their curiosity."

I.I. Rabi, Nobel Prize, 1944

Ever wondered what causes static cling, how a rocket works or why a steel boat floats while a steel ball sinks? How come the sky is blue on a sunny day, and why does rubbing your hands together warm them?

Physics students know the answers.

Physics deals with the basic aspects of how matter behaves, or simply, why things are the way they are. Other fields of science, such as biology, chemistry, geology and engineering, all use physics, making it an important building block for not only a career in science but in many other professions.

At Douglas College, we offer a selection of physics courses covering topics such as mechanics, astronomy, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics and geophysics. If you're not quite ready for college-level courses, we also offer introductory physics courses to help you prepare for studies in science and technology.

Most physics courses include weekly sessions in well-equipped laboratories. We keep the lab groups small, meaning you'll get more contact with the lab supervisor while carrying out your studies.

We invite you to explore our site and find out more about physics at Douglas College.

Do You Know?

Did you know that an amusement park is a life-size physics lab? You can feel the physical forces in action. Concepts like acceleration, momentum, gravitational potential energy, and weightlessness become real as you experience the roller coaster, the colliding bumper car, the swinging cages, or the fall-away floor. These are concepts explained in physics courses.
