Music Technology Certificate FAQs

Show all | Hide all | Print FAQS
  • What are the prerequisites?

    • To gain acceptance into the Music Technology Certificate Program, you must be able to demonstrate the following:
      • Some background in technology
      • Literacy in music, or some music theory background
      • Musical ability (singing or playing)

To assess these abilities, we will conduct an audition, technology assessment and music literacy assessment. You may be able to waive these prerequisites if you have completed certain music technology or theory courses (either at Douglas or another post-secondary institution). If you need to upgrade your technology or theory skills before applying, you may be able to do so through the Douglas College Community Music School. Please contact us (info at bottom of page) for more information on prerequisites and preparing for assessment.

      • Note that an MTC Prep technology intensive course has been scheduled for March 19-23. All prospective MTC students are strongly advised to take this course, which will review audio and MIDI concepts and provide an introduction the the studio equipment at Douglas College. Contact the Community Music School for more information: commusic@douglascollege.ca
      • The next scheduled MTC Assessment date is Saturday March 24. Please contact Monica Kim performingarts@douglascollege.ca to book a time.
  • What if I don't pass all the assessments?

    • We strongly encourage all potential MTC students to prepare in advance for the technology, ability and literacy assessments. Fully qualified applicants will be accepted first. However, we do understand that there are some talented and motivated students who may not have had the opportunity to prepare for all three components. If you don't pass all three assessments there are several options available:
      • Take the MTC Prep class (above) - successful completion will satisfy the music technology requirement.
      • Take lessons or classes in music literacy and rewrite the test.
      • Upgrade on your own and rewrite the test(s). (We can suggest some resources).
      • Plan to take a Basic Theory course in September as an MTC elective.
  • How much does the program cost?

    • Tuition is calculated on a per-credit basis. Typical tuition cost will be approximately $4,000 per year ($2,000 per semester). Supplies, books and computer expenses are extra - please contact the Coordinator for more details.
  • How long does the program take to complete?

    • This program is two semesters of full-time study - which means you'll start in September and end in April of the following year, with a break between semesters in December.
  • When does the program start?

    • There is one yearly intake in September.
  • Where will my classes take place?

    • All classes will take place at the New Westminster Campus.
  • Are there other programs like this in British Columbia?

    • Currently, this is the only program of this kind at a public post-secondary institution in BC.
  • Can I take this program while I'm working?

    • Due to the intensive nature of the program, we do not recommend that you work while taking this program. Some out of class commitment will be required. However, some MTC students have successfully completed the program while working part-time. If you must work while attending the MTC, we suggest that you ensure that your work schedule does not conflict with scheduled MTC classes and activities.
  • What kind of jobs can I get with this credential?

    • Graduates of this program will possess valuable skills that will help them prepare for a variety of roles, including:
      • freelance professional musicians
      • composition for film or tv
      • studio engineers
      • arrangers
      • music educators
      • producers
      • music retail
      • live sound engineers
  • How and when do I apply?

    • There is very strong interest in this program, and interested students are advised to apply as early as possible. Applications will be considered on a first-come first-served basis until the program is full. Interested students should apply at http://www.douglas.bc.ca/application-services.html
