Ways to study
The Health Care Support Worker Program offers you flexible choices. You can select the right option for your goals, based on your current level of education and training:
- New students may complete the full 3-semester Health Care Support Worker Certificate
- New students may complete either the 2-semester Health Care Attendant Certificate or the 1-semester Community Mental Health Worker Citation
- Graduates who have already completed either the Home Support Resident Care Attendant or Community Mental Health Worker Citations or the Health Care Assistant Certificate can upgrade to earn the full Health Care Support Worker Certificate
What’s the difference?
In the Health Care Assistant Certificate Program, you will learn how to provide holistic care that promotes physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being of people experiencing diverse, often complex, but relatively stable health needs. You will gain knowledge and skills in providing person-focused care such as assisting with grooming and supporting people to participate in social/recreational activities and helping to maintain their mobility. The general focus of this program is caring for clients with physical care needs and/or dementia.
In the Community Mental Health Worker Citation Program, you will learn how to apply the principles of recovery using psychosocial rehabilitation. You will gain knowledge and skills in assisting individuals with mental health issues to maximize their independence. You will also gain skills in running group sessions on health, wellness, symptom management and assertiveness. The general focus of this program is Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR).
The Health Care Support Worker Certificate Program combines both of the above programs into one 3-semester certificate program. It will provide you with the most complete skill set for employment in a unique and dynamic field. It focuses on both mental and physical health care.
