Services

Bulletin Board

There will be a bulletin board outside of Room 3302 for the duration of the Explore program. This bulletin board provides class lists, schedule updates, sign-up sheets and information for optional activities, information about field trips, and information about things you might want to do during your free time. If you would like a copy of any of the information that is on the bulletin board, please contact the Student Activities Coordinator once you arrive.

Student Card

You will receive a student card which entitles you to

- student discounts at various locations in and around New Westminster
- Douglas College library borrowing privileges

Please carry the student card with you at all times.

Computers

The English as a Second Language program has two specialized labs that may be available to students in Explore.

Rooms 4206 and 4208 are computer-based labs used for reading, writing, listening, speaking, and prounuciation.  Because these rooms are very heavily used as classrooms, they are only available to students during classes booked by their instructor and limited drop-in lab times.

The program will also use labs available to all Douglas College students for classes and workshops.  There are over three hundred computers available on the 5th and 6th floors for class and individual student use.  Room 6212 is always a drop in lab.  See our New Westminster Lab Availability page.

Our library is also equipped with computers for research and other student use.

All generally accessible student labs house Windows-based systems. There are no macs available to students.

You will be assigned a username and password when you arrive. Always make sure you log out when you have finished using a computer.

Storing Your Work

All work saved to a computer during a session is deleted at the end of a session. Once you log out, your work is gone. We recommend using a flash drive to store your classwork. Almost all student computers have front USB ports, CD read-write, and DVD read capabilities. All student computers have Internet access, so you can email your classwork to yourself if you do not have a flash drive.

Email

You will not be provided with an email account through Douglas College. Please make sure you have an email account you can access while at Douglas College or ask immersion staff for help in creating an account.

Wireless Access

Wireless Internet access is available to laptop users throughout most of Douglas College.  There is no charge for this service.

Support

We have support technicians available to help you with technical problems or questions. Have your student card with you any time you want to use a lab or get help from a technician. Please identify yourself as an ESL immersion student because procedures may be different for you than for those of other students.

Printing

There are printers available for student use in computer labs and in the library.  Students can print in color in the library for an additional charge.

Media Development Room

A scanner and video editing bays are available in the Media Development Room. You must attend a workshop before you can access this facility.
