Bailiff

Bailiffs are hired by private firms contracted out by the BC Ministry of Attorney General, Court Services Branch.  The position involves a considerable amount of walking and driving.  Bailiffs usually work nine hour shifts and overtime work is usually necessary.

Bailiffs will generally perform the following duties:

  • Keeping accounting of trust funds
  • Interpreting relevant laws
  • Enforcing court-ordered seizures of assets
  • Selling of assets
  • Disbursement of proceeds in accordance with legislation
  • Keeping accurate records of the seizure and sale of assets

Minimum requirements of applicants include:

  • Age of 19 years or older
  • Canadian citizenship
  • Criminal record check
  • Background check
  • Fingerprinting
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Executing a Court Order course
  • Communication skills
  • Note taking skills
  • Ability to learn new information and skills
  • Ability to make sound judgments
  • Ability to defuse hostile situations

In addition, preferred credentials include:

  • Work experience in a related field such as law enforcement
