Interpreting in Medical Settings

Interpreting in Medical Settings Level I

This five day course will provide participants an opportunity to learn about anatomy and physiology in American Sign Language (ASL), with an emphasis on classifiers, as well as specialized terminology related to medical settings. In addition, students will analyze and practice interpreting the discourse used in medical settings. Class time will be interactive and hands-on, with lots of time for practice.

Instructors

Nigel Howard, is an ASL instructor at Douglas College in the Department of Sign Language Interpretation and coordinates ASL classes for Continuing Education.  He also teaches in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Victoria.  Nigel has worked as a Deaf Interpreter for over 15 years, often in medical settings, and co-developed and taught curriculum related to interpreting in medical settings at Douglas College and elsewhere.  Nigel has a BA in Psychology from the University of British Columbia and has Deaf Studies certification from University of Bristol.

Janice "JJ" Lyons (formerly Jickels), is Head of Interpreting Services (Community Interpreting Services and Medical Interpreting Services) at Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  She has worked as a Deaf Interpreter for 12 years in a variety of settings, often medical. She graduated from the Douglas College interpreting program in 1998.

Karen Malcolm, has been an interpreter for 30 years, and an interpreter educator for 22. Her current work is focused primarily on medical and mental health settings, in which she has worked for 20 years.  She holds national certification as an interpreter (COI).  Karen was formerly faculty in the Department of Sign Language Interpretation at Douglas College for 21 years, and holds her Masters in Teaching Interpreting from Western Maryland College.

Interpreting in Medical Settings Level II

This course provides opportunities to develop advanced skills in ASL and interpreting for interpreters working in emergency and specialized medical settings. Building on foundational skills learned in Interpreting in Medical Settings Level I, students will continue to explore the use of ASL in conveying medical discourse as well as effective strategies for interpreting between ASL and English in these settings.

Prerequisite:  Interpreting in Medical Settings Level I (ASLM 192) or permission of the instructor.  Students who have not completed ASLM 192 are to contact Karen Malcolm directly at kmalcolm@shaw.ca

Accommodation: The residence at Victory Hill is available to out of town participants.  Students are to contact Nigel Howard directly for accommodation information at howardn@douglascollege.ca

Receipts issued for income tax purposes.  Discounted parking.  One block from New Westminster Skytrain station.  A certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the course.  Official and unofficial transcripts are available upon request.
