Employment
Follow-up research with our graduates shows that well over 90% are working in social service positions.
Many employers and agencies prefer hiring Douglas grads because they bring job-ready skills from classroom learning and from supervised work placements. It's quite common for grads to find jobs with employers they met through work placements.
Graduates work in government, private and non-profit settings:
- Transition houses
- Seniors' centres
- Crisis centres
- Multi-service agencies
- Drug and alcohol centres
- Multicultural services
- Mental Health services
The provincial government predicts that demand for social service workers will remain high, particularly in job-training, residential care and private social service agencies.
"The growing population of elderly persons, the mentally disabled and developmentally challenged, pregnant teenagers, homeless persons and those with substance abuse problems will continue the need for these workers. Other areas where growth is expected are in native outreach and community development, especially for youth, as well as in rehabilitation." - Work Futures/Government of BC
Degree upgrades: As a CSSW grad, you'll have the option to improve your career potential by completing a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care. Diploma graduates can complete a degree with just two more years of study. Transfer to other university programs is also an option, with additional university transfer courses.
