Fieldwork (Supervisor Information)
Please note: this section is for teachers, coaches, programmers and other individuals who would like more information about having a Douglas College Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching student volunteer with their organization. Students interested in learning more about fieldwork placement can contact the department.- Elementary schools with a teacher teaching PE, with a teacher coaching or with a generalist teacher
- Secondary/Middle schools with a PE specialist, with a teacher coaching, with a science/biology teacher

- Private or public recreation facilities that provide group or individual programming.
How do I become a site supervisor?
- Complete and return a Fieldwork Commitment Form.
- The Fieldwork Faculty Supervisor will contact your administrator to gain approval of you and your school/club as a mentor.
- The Fieldwork Placement Coordinator will match student to placement.
- The Fieldwork Placement Coordinator will inform site supervisor and student of placement by either mail or email. The BPEC Fieldwork Handbook (Fall 2010) outlining policies timelines and procedures; responsibilities outlining assignments, student responsibilities and site supervisor roles; and the Assignment Overview will be included.
- Student and site supervisor will meet in the third week of the semester (September or January) to sign a fieldwork contract and planned fieldwork hours sheet and to review fieldwork assignments. Students lead this discussion.
How long are fieldworks?
The students in the Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching degree program at Douglas College are required to do a 15-hour supervised volunteer placement in the following environments: physical education and coaching and science/biology or elementary classroom. Students complete one fieldwork placement in each of their eight academic terms. If you are a coach, teacher, program leader, or individual who works teaching or coaching children, our students may be able to work alongside you.
What are my responsibilities?
The fieldwork model is based on experiential learning, there is no supervision or visitation from College Faculty and the course is graded on a pass/fail Mastery basis. As a fieldwork site supervisor, your responsibility will be to:
- Commit to taking student(s) in either the fall or winter semester, or both.
- Once a student is assigned to you, make yourself available for an initial meeting (approximately 1 hour) to get to know your student and determine the goals and schedule for the fieldwork.
- To review the Douglas College BPEC Fieldwork documents to understand structure and expectations.
- To orientate the student to the school or club setting by formally introducing the student to the administration, other staff members and the students/athletes.
- Complete the informal Midterm Appraisal with the student, halfway through the Fieldwork hours. This allows for student learning and improvement to occur in that weak competency area.
- Provide ongoing feedback to the BPEC student on their professional development, leadership and on educational issues.
- Allow the BPEC student opportunities for observation, assisting or leading directly with the participants.
- At the end of the semester complete the final 2-page written final evaluation of the student.
What can I expect from students?
All students have had a criminal record search completed and have an active First Aid /CPR certification. Student experiences are progressive across the four years of the Bachelor¿s Degree and the expectations change from observation in Year 1, to assisting in Year 2, to co-teaching in Year 3, to independent leadership in Year 4. Student expectations are more fully described in your fieldwork handbook when you become a site supervisor.
Fieldwork Tasks - Year 1 through Year 4
To review the progressive leadership of BPEC fieldwork courses and fieldwork tasks required of the BPEC fieldwork students, please see the Fieldwork Task Grid. BPEC Fieldwork professional behaviours and performance expectations while on site across all the BPEC years are also detailed.
How many students are available?
Each term, there are approximately 140 students who need to be placed. We try to determine these placements in June for September placements, and December for January placements.
