Mar 15 - Douglas College wrestler nabs U.S. championship
A Douglas College wrestler pinned his opponent to capture a U.S. national championship in the 149 lb weight class last weekend.
Daniel Swain, 20, beat Daniel Carr of Maryland-Baltimore County by fall in the final at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Championship in Macon, Ga., March 10-12.
Swain is originally from Newport, Washington, but now lives in Burnaby. He is a freshman at Douglas College taking general studies.
Swain wrestled in five matches at the championship, winning all but the semi-final by fall.
"Daniel has a huge amount of confidence and wrestled like someone who expected to win," says Steve Rose, Head Wrestling Coach at Douglas College. "It was admirable how calm he was. He showed a great deal of poise."
In winning the 149 bracket, Swain completed his season undefeated at 10-0.
"I think he has a great future," says Rose. "He also does mixed martial arts, and I think he's got a bright future in both."
Douglas College was the only Canadian school to enter the tournament.
