Mar 28 - Douglas raises close to $8,000 for Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims
Monies raised were collected over two weeks and donated to the Red Cross.
International students from Japan set up a booth in the concourse at the New Westminster Campus to collect donations shortly after the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan March 11.
This semester there are 45 students from Japan at Douglas.
"Ruth" Xiao Wen Qiu, a student working toward her Associate Arts Degree, enlisted the international students to make origami cranes, which she then arranged into the Japanese character for "love" on a flip chart at the booth.
Douglas students and employees were encouraged to take a crane and write a message to Japanese victims in its place. Leaving a donation was optional.
Hiroshi Yasuoka, international education advisor at Douglas, says he was surprised by the amount of money raised.
"It's amazing to see what students can do when they want to get involved. I would like to thank the Douglas College community for their generosity and show of support for those affected by the earthquake in Japan."
New Westminster mayor Wayne Wright visited the college on Friday to make a donation and express his appreciation of Douglas.
"It's important in this city to have institutions that make a difference. Douglas College makes a difference. This is an example of what it does aside from educating people. It teaches them compassion and it keeps them knowledgeable about what's going on in the world. I'm very proud of it."
