Douglas plays smashing host to top birdie bashers

Douglas College Royals take home Provincial Team Championship with the individual competition results as follows:

  • Men's Singles: Peter Huang (Capilano)
  • Women's Singles: RuiLin Huang (Douglas)
  • Men's Doubles: Chris Chung and Pierre Tang (Langara)
  • Women's Doubles: Melody Liang and Stephanie Ko (Douglas)
  • Mixed Doubles: Bryan Cassels and Jenny Aronson (VIU)

This past weekend Douglas College played host to the 2011 BCCAA Badminton Championships at the David Lam Campus, Pinetree Community Centre, Coquitlam. The tournament saw some of the province's top athletes in the sport compete for a berth in the national tournament March 3-5 in Sackville, NS.

Saturday's competition determined the provincial team championship, with each team mixing and matching line-ups to accumulate the most wins in each event.

On the merits of their seasonal play, the Douglas College Royals had secured the top spot coming into Saturday's competition, with a point total that put them out of reach from the competing teams. The Royals would reign as provincial team champions for the sixth straight year.

Sunday's competition saw the athletes compete for a spot in the National Tournament in each event. All competitors made every bit of effort on the court with tremendous rallies, leaving the crowd to applaud their skill.

The marquis event of the tournament was the men's doubles draw, with the team of Pierre Tang and Chris Chung (Langara) taking home the gold medal. The men's singles, women's singles and women's doubles events finished true to their tournament seedings, with Peter Huang (Capilano), RuiLin Huang (Douglas), and Melody Li and Stephanie Ko (Douglas) taking home gold in each of their events.

In the mixed doubles event, Bryan Cassels and Jenny Aronson (VIU) staved off a spirited effort by Jensen Ly and Ashely Jang to win first place.
