LLPA Student Awards, Prizes and Scholarships
The Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts offers the following awards, bursaries and scholarships to students within the Faculty's nine departments and programs including Creative Writing, English, Modern Languages, Music, Performing Arts, Professional Writing, Stagecraft and Event Technology, Theatre and the Community Music School.
These awards/scholarships are regularly given to students who excel academically while also displaying a passion for one or more subject areas within Language, Literature and Performing Arts. Applications must be received by the deadlines noted. Winners will be announced as noted.
Please read below for a list of available 2011 LLPA Scholarships/Awards and Bursaries, including downloadable application forms.
Some awards, bursaries and scholarships are administered directly by a program, in which case students must apply as noted (under "How to Apply.")
To apply for all other awards, bursaries and scholarships, students complete a single form, available online through Registration Services, or via the Financial Aid office.

Prize Guidelines
Awards are available to returning students who have achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA and who have demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students who have exhausted all other sources of funding, including student loans, and are still in need.
Bursaries are available to new and returning students demonstrating financial need. Preference is given to students who have exhausted all other sources of funding, including student loans, and are still in need. Returning students must have a minimum 2.0 semester GPA.
Scholarships are available to returning students who have achieved a record of academic excellence at Douglas COllege. Students must have completed a minimum of 12 graded credits at Douglas College with a minimum GPA of 3.5 prior to submitting an application for scholarships.

COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL
Chestnut Community Music School Award of Distinction
This endowment was established courtesy of Laura Chestnut's Estate. Laura was a patron of the Arts both performing and display at Douglas College.
Awards valued at approximately $300 will be awarded annually to students who
- Are enrolled in Community Music School lessons at Douglas College
- Demonstrate great potential for performance excellence
Course and/or lesson fees owing to the Community Music School must be paid in full before cheques will be issued to award recipients.

CREATIVE WRITING
Maurice Hodgson Creative Writing Award of Distinction
This award has been established in memory of the man who founded and developed most of the creative writing courses at Douglas College. Each year a cash prize will be awarded to a promising creative writing student who has
- Completed a minimum of two creative writing courses at Douglas College
- Enrolled in a third creative writing course in the Winter term. One of these must be a second-year course (CRWR 2200, 2202, 2201 or 2350)
- The applicant must have maintained a "B" average, or better, in completed courses
How to apply:
- Students apply to the Creative Writing Department Chair
- The application should include a 500-word letter to the Department Chair explaining how writing matters in the applicant's life, a transcript confirming his or her eligibility (as per the above listed criteria) and a portfolio of selected work (maximum 30 pages), including original stories, poems and/or plays, and revised versions

The winner will be announced at the annual launch of Pearls, the Creative Writing Student Anthology.
Gail Fraser Scholarship for Literary Studies
This scholarship was established in 2011 in memory of Douglas College English Instructor Gail Fraser. Gail's family wished to support students who followed a similar path to Gail, "a real scholar with a keen mind." The goal of the scholarship is to recognize and reward female students who have completed an Associate of Arts degree with a specialization in English or Creative Writing OR an Associate of Arts degree without specialization but including a combined minimum of six English and/or Creative Writing courses at Douglas College and are moving on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in either English or Creative Writing.
Eligible applicants must:
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.5
- Have completed an Associate of Arts degree (or 60-credit diploma equivalent) with a specialization in English or Creative Writing OR an Associate of Arts degree without specialization but including a combined minimum of six English and/or Creative Writing courses; and
- Be accepted as a transfer student from Douglas College into a Bachelor of Arts program in English or Bachelor of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing.
- Preference will be given to a student transferring into the English (BA) or Creative Writing (BFA) programs at the University of British Columbia.

- A written reflection (essay/creative or personal narrative), 1000 - 1500 words in length, addressing the role and importance of literature in the student's education and/or life, as well as in the student's future study plans.

Awards
First Year
Essay Prize in Academic Writing: In Honour of Bill Main
This prize celebrates excellence in writing, including argumentation, style and mechanics, integration and documentation of sources and appropriate formatting. The prize goes to the essay deemed the best overall among those submitted in Academic Writing (ENGL 1130) in each academic year (May through April).

Sally Allan Memorial Award
This award was created in memory of Sally Allan, a former Douglas College student, by her daughters. The purpose of this annual fund is to provide an award to students in the English Program. Criteria for eligibility include
- Mature student status (visit DC Calendar for definition)
- A minimum GPA of 3.0
- Preference will be given to students with a disability

Scholarships
First Year
Susan Wasserman Canadian Literature Scholarship
This award was established by Susan Wasserman upon her retirement in 2010, after nearly three decades of teaching in the Douglas College English Department. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in any program who meets the following criteria:
- The top student in English 1101: Studies in Canadian Literature within the previous Winter, Fall, or Summer semester
- Has a minimum GPA of 3.5 in English courses taken
How to Apply:
- No applications are necessary. Students will be nominated by their Canadian Literature instructors
Second Year
Ken McGlinchy English Scholarship
Preference will be given to those who have successfully completed, or are currently enrolled in, a Canadian Literature course. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who
- Has completed at least two first-year English courses
- Is currently enrolled in a second or third year Literature or English course
- Has a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.5

Sylvia Perry English Studies Scholarship
The Douglas College English Department established this schoarlship in honour of Sylvia Perry, a former English instructor at the College. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who
- Has completed at least two first-year university-transferable English courses
- Has completed one second-year English course at Douglas College, and
- Has an average GPA in these English courses of at least 3.5
The prize is awarded to the applicant with the highest GPA in the required courses.
How to Apply:
- Students nominate themselves for this prize by forwarding their name and student number to the English Department Chair
Deadlines:
- December 31 if the second-year course is completed in Summer or Fall
- April 30 if the second-year course is completed in Winter
MODERN LANGUAGES
The Marie-Claire Chinniah French Book Award of Distinction (for students of French)
This book award was established in honour of retired instructor Marie-Claire Chinniah who devoted her career to the French Program at Douglas College since its creation. The recipient will
- Have demonstrated outstanding improvement in a French course taken in the current school year
- Be enrolled as a student at Douglas College when the book is awarded at the end of the winter semester
How to apply:
- No application is necessary; winners will be chosen by the French language instructors.
Announcement of winners:
- The book will be awarded to the recipient on the last day of class, or if the recipient is not taking a French course in the winter semester, a French instructor will contact the student and offer the award in person
- The winner's name will be announced in all French classes
- With the written permission of the recipient, the name will be posted on the College's webpage, in the student newspaper (if possible), and on a poster the French instructors will create which will be posted in permanence
MUSIC
Awards
Music Entrance Awards of Distinction (formerly scholarships)
- Hugh Livingston Maze Music Award of Distinction
- Meiji University Mandolin OB Club Music Award of Distinction (for a guitar student)
These awards will be given to students who are
- Entering full-time University Transfer Music programs at Douglas College
- Enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the required music courses for which they are eligible
How to apply:
- Applicants must audition
- Pass the theory requirement, and
- Submit the application before the deadline on the application form
The number of awards and the amount of each will be at the discretion of the Music Department.

- Auditions are in April and May
The awards will be based upon demonstrated achievement and potential at the auditions and presume acceptable theory entrance standings. Consideration will also be given to secondary school grades and a letter of reference.
Winners must confirm their intention to enroll at Douglas College by June 15 and must register in all the required Music courses (11 credits minimum).
Announcement of winners:
- Letters to winners will be mailed as soon as possible after the auditions have closed. Winners are featured in a special recital at the end of the school year
Music Awards of Distinction (formerly scholarships) for Continuing Students

David Peterkin Memorial Music Award of Distinction
The Douglas College Music Department established this fund in memory of David Peterkin, a founding faculty member of the Department. A candidate must be
- Enrolled in the Basic Musicianship Program in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible
- A student who combines excellence in performance and academic Music subjects
The scholarship must be applied toward further Music studies at Douglas College.
How to apply:
- No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty
Dr. G. Herald Keefer Music (Organ) Award of Distinction
This award was established by Dr. Keefer, an organ builder and composer, and is given to
- A keyboard student, with preference to an organ student, in either the Basic Musicianship or University Transfer Music Program at Douglas College
- The candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible
- The recipient must have a satisfactory standing in the Music academic subjects and must use the award for further Music studies at Douglas College

Len Whiteley Memorial Music Award of Distinction
The Douglas College Music Department established this fund in memory of Len Whiteley, a founding faculty member of the Department. A candidate must be
- Enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible
- The award is given preferably to a brass player and, alternatively, to any member of the Concert Band who will be continuing with second-year Music studies at Douglas College
- The recipient must have a satisfactory standing in the Music academic subjects

Music Student Achievement Awards
The fund for these awards was established from proceeds from a scholarship benefit concert given by the Canadian guitarist, Norbert Kraft and from Music faculty contributions. Three or more awards will be given to second-year students who have shown significant musical growth during their time in the University Transfer Music Program at Douglas College. The successful recipients will have demonstrated
- Outstanding musical and intellectual achievement
- A willingness to develop and participate in all areas of the program, and
- A commitment to their studies through consistent effort and application
- Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which they are eligible.

Rotary Women's Association Music Award of Distinction
The Rotary Women's Association (RWA) established this annual award to reward and recognize outstanding students enrolled in the Music Program at Douglas College. Recipients of this award will attend a RWA meeting and showcase their instrumental or vocal talents by way of a performance. The successful candidate will be
- In academic good standing at the college
- Enrolled full-time in the Music, University Transfer Program
- Enrolled in either first or second year of their studies, but should have completed at least one semester of study in the Music Program
- Preference will be given to candidates in financial need

Silverman Music Award of Distinction
Robert and Ellen Silverman established this award to recognize the most outstanding performer in any of the Music Programs. A candidate must be
- Enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible
- The successful recipient must have a satisfactory standing in the Music academic subjects and must use the award for further Music studies at Douglas College

Tatsuo Hoshina Voice Award of Distinction
The Douglas College Music Department established this award in appreciation of the long service of Tatsuo Hoshina, a former faculty member who retired in 1998. A candidate must be
- Enrolled in the University Transfer Music Program in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible
- The recipient will have demonstrated excellence in voice performance and will have maintained a satisfactory standing in other Music courses. The award is given preferably to a voice concentrator or, alternatively, to any member of the Choir. The award must be used for further Music studies at Douglas College.

Walter G. Robertson Memorial Music Award of Distinction
The Douglas College Music Department established this fund in memory of Walter G. Robertson, a founding faculty member of the Department. A candidate must be
- Enrolled in the University Transfer Music Program in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible
- The award goes to a student who combines excellence in performance and academic Music subjects. The award must be applied to second-year university transfer Music studies at Douglas College

These scholarships will be given to students who are
- Entering full-time University Transfer Music programs at Douglas College, and
- Enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the required Music courses for which they are eligible.

- Pass the theory requirement, and

Chestnut Scholarship for Credit University Transfer Music Program Students (for Theory and History)
The Douglas College Music Department established this scholarship from the Laura Chestnut Memorial Endowment. Successful candidates must
- Be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible,
- Be registered in either the second or third semester of the University Transfer Music Program,
- Demonstrate excellence in theory and/or history, and
- Maintain a satisfactory standing in the performance subjects.
The scholarship is to be applied toward further Music studies at Douglas College.

Henry Waack Music Scholarship
This award was established by Henry Waack, a founding faculty member of the Department who retired in 1993. Preference is given to
- Very promising students with an excellent record in the performing and academic parts of the Program
- A candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits in the Basic Musicianship or University Transfer Music Program, including all the core Music courses for which s/he is eligible

Awards
Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Award of Merit (MUSIC, STAGECRAFT AND EVENT TECHNOLOGY, OR THEATRE)
This fund was established in memory of Laura C. Muir, an avid patron of the arts who participated in numerous theatre productions in her community over the years. This award was created by Laura's family in recognition of hard working and enthusiastic students enrolled in the University Transfer Music, Stagecraft and Event Technology, or Theatre Programs at Douglas College. One student from each of these three disciplines will receive an award. Preference is given to students with a GPA of 3.0.
Criteria for this award include
- Second year standing in one of the University Transfer Music, Stagecraft and Event Technology, or Theatre Programs
- Hard work, leadership and enthusiasm. Preference will be given to candidates who are actively contributing to their community through volunteer work and/or who have overcome adversity

Bruce McMillan Performing Arts Award (PERFORMING ARTS)
Family and friends of Bruce McMillan established this award in his memory. Candidates of the award are to be chosen from the Douglas College Performing Arts Program and will

Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society 2nd Year Entrance Award of Distinction (STAGECRAFT AND EVENT TECHNOLOGY OR THEATRE)
This annual award was established by the Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society to reward outstanding students enrolled in the Douglas College Theatre and Stagecraft Diploma Programs. The Society was established in 1996 with the aim of promoting and facilitating performing arts and artists in the community of New Westminster. To be eligible, students must
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0,
- Be entering into the second year of either the Stagecraft or Theatre Diploma Programs, and
- Have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their studies, course work, or a performance as judged by either Stagecraft or Theatre faculty.
- Preference will be given to residents of New Westminster whenever possible.

Bursaries
The Society for the Preservation of Vaudeville Bursary in Honour of Jim Trimble (MUSIC, PERFORMING ARTS, STAGECRAFT AND EVENT TECHNOLOGY OR THEATRE)
This Endowment fund was created in 2004 by The Society for the Preservation of Vaudeville from the proceeds of an annual Vaudevillian performance. This bursary is available to a student who is

The Arts Council of New Westminster established this fund in 1988 to provide one or more scholarships to students enrolled in the Performing Arts Programs at Douglas College. The successful candidate must be

- Show a special aptitude in his/her field

Carly Reid Memorial Award
This award was established in memory of Carly Reid, a former Douglas College student enrolled in the Professional Writing (formerly Print Futures) program, by her family. Recipients must be enrolled in either the Professional Writing Diploma program or the Nursing program to qualify. Preference will be given to students with a disability who show compassion and caring to others and exemplify a spirit of joie de vivre.

Beth Anderson Memorial Bursary
This bursary was established in memory of Beth who discovered her passion for writing while attending the Professional Writing (formerly Print Futures) Program at Douglas College. The life of this exceptional woman and gifted writer was tragically cut short in 1998 at a time when she was just beginning to believe in herself and in her potential. This bursary will be given to a student who is

STAGECRAFT AND EVENT TECHNOLOGY
Awards
Pearl Belleson Stagecraft Award of Distinction
The Douglas College Stagecraft Department has established this award in memory of Pearl Belleson, a long-time friend and colleague who passed away in 1999. Pearl was a renowned set and costume designer who worked on several shows at Douglas College during the 1980s and 1990s. Pearl loved teaching and mentoring students - a passion she discovered while working as a designer at Douglas College. The staff and faculty who admired and respected Pearl's dedication and talent have established this award in her honour. This award will be granted to
- A first or second year student enrolled in the Stagecraft Program with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to students who excel in their program

Stagecraft and Event Technology 2-year Performance-Based Entrance Award of Distinction
The Stagecraft and Event Technology 2-year entrance award was created to provide a first-year student who has demonstrated excellence in academic and technical production activities with a full-tuition scholarship while completing their studies at Douglas College. The goal of this award is to distribute one award, one bursary and one scholarship each year in the amount of $1000 each.To be chosen as a recipient for, and continue to receive the Performance-Based Scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria:
- The student must be enrolled in the full-time Stagecraft and Event Technology (STGE) Program.
- The student must maintain full-time status in the STGE Program.
- The student must enrol in a minimum of 12 credits of core STGE courses.
- The student must maintain a satisfactory academic standing in each semester with no grade less than C- in any STGE course.
- The student will demonstrate exceptional ability as a team player and role model for the student body.
The Performance-Based Scholarship will be awarded after final grades in the first semester. All students will be required to register and pay fees for the second semester. The recipient of the Scholarship will receive a refund of tuition and other applicable fees for the first and second semesters. The Scholarship will also include tuition and other applicable fees for the remaining third and fourth semesters.
The Performance-Based Scholarship is non-transferable.

Theatre
Dorothy Jones Theatre Award of Distinction
The Dorothy Jones Theatre Award was created to honour Dorothy on the occasion of her retirement by her colleagues from the Theatre Department. Dorothy was instrumental in the development of the Theatre Program at Douglas College and was employed with the College for almost 20 years. This award is intended for a second-year student of the Theatre Program who
- Has completed first-year Theatre at Douglas College,
- Has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and
- Has demonstrated performance excellence either on stage or in the classroom.

Theatre Department Ensemble Award of Distinction
This award was created by the Douglas College Theatre Department for a student entering the 2nd year of the Theatre Diploma Program. The candidate must
- Have completed the first year of study at Douglas College, with the intent to complete the Theatre Diploma
- Demonstrate exemplary behaviour as a member of the student body of the Theatre Department and of Douglas College as a whole
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0

ENDOWMENTS (Applications to be made by Faculty and/or Staff)
Compass Group Canada Arts Endowment
The purpose of the Compass Group Canada Arts Endowment is to fund special arts events or projects.
A committee will review all applications and make recommendation to the Douglas Foundation Board of Directors for final approval.
The Funds will be used to support a special arts event/projects put on by an area of the College;
- The event/project enhances learning
- The event/project involves the College community; both internal and external
- Funds may be used for advertising to increase awareness of arts events at the College
How to apply:
- Application must be submitted to the committee by the Dean of Language, Literature and Performing Arts.

Kruger Products Arts Endowment
The purpose of the Kruger Products Arts Endowment is to fund special arts events or projects.
A committee will review all applications and make recommendation to the Douglas Foundation Board of Directors for final approval.
The Funds will be used to support a special arts event/projects put on by an area of the College;
- The event/project enhances learning
- The event/project involves the College community; both internal and external

- Application must be submitted to the committee by the Dean of Language, Literature and Performing Arts.

Laura C. Muir Arts Endowment (MUSIC, STAGECRAFT AND EVENT TECHNOLOGY OR THEATRE)
The purpose of this endowment is to fund special arts programs and projects that encourage student development and/or increase the faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts¿ public profile.When there is excess funding, or unsatisfactory program and project submissions, the endowment may be used for the purpose of purchasing specific equipment and/or supplies for the Music, Stagecraft and Theatre Programs.
A committee comprised of representatives from the Music, Stagecraft and Event Technology and Theatre programs will review all aplications for funding and make recommendation to the Dean of Language, Literature and Performing ARts for final approval.
Applications for funding must include the following information:
- A one to two page letter outlining the proposed project
- Names of participating students
- A description clearly stating how the project will benefit the LLPA Department
- A detailed description of how the funding will help the participants achieve the project's goals
Students granted funding must
- Submit an end-of-project report to their program co-ordinator detailing their activities no later than 30 days after the competion of their project
Eligibility:
- Activities eligible for funding may include collaborative projects between students enrolled in the Music, Stagecraft and Event Technology and/or Theatre Programs.
- If no suitable programs or projects are identified, funding may be granted for the purchase of specifric equipment and/or supplies needed by the Music, Stagecraft and Event Technology, or Theatre Programs
- Preference will be given to programs/projects and supplies/equipment that benefit more than one of the three programs
- This fund is not to be used for the purpose of regular operational expenses or departmental wages
Deadlines:
- Students may apply for funding in the Fall and Winter semesters to support Summer semester programs and projects
- Application deadline for Summer projects (or projects occuring before September 1st of the same yaer) is February 15
