TESTING:

Each support staff position at Douglas College has specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities defined as part of the job and hiring criteria. A number of these criteria are routinely tested during the competition process. Testing is one of the steps and establishes that a candidate has the required basic skills for the position. Training on specific software is available through CEIT as well as at Microsoft Office.com

Skills which are often tested include:

  • Word Processing - Word
  • Spreadsheet - Excel
  • Customer Service
  • Keyboarding
  • Administration Skills
  • Data Entry
  • Reading Comprehension

Tests have been established using criterion-related validity (the tests help to predict essential job performance characteristics).

Candidates may be required to take departmental tests to ensure competency in a specialized skill or program area.

The following testing time frames and conditions apply to internal candidates:

Knowledge tests  - Word, Excel, Customer Service, Reading Comprehension and Administrative Support

To maintain the validity of the knowledge based tests, the College follows a best practices procedure of a waiting period between opportunities to test.  The intent of the waiting period is to ensure that testing reflects the true knowledge of the employee and not a memorization of the questions and answers.

If an employee does not meet the testing requirements for knowledge based tests, they may re-test after a period of three months.  If the employee still does not meet the testing requirements, they may return to re-test after an additional three months.  If, after the third attempt, the employee does not meet the testing requirements, they may return to re-test after an additional six months.  Further retesting will be permitted only where an employee is able to provide evidence of attempts to gain the required knowledge (for example: successful completion of an Excel or Word course, etc.)

Skills tests, Keyboarding, and Data Entry

If an employee does not meet the testing requirement for skill based tests, they may re-test if it has been demonstrated there has been a significant attempt to improve the skill (for example: the candidate has spent time practicing/upgrading his/her keyboarding/data entry skills or taken a course, etc.).

For either Knowledge-based or Skill-based tests, an employee may request to re-test even if he/she has not applied to a specific job posting, so long as the above time frames and other requirements have been met.
