Professional development offerings for the fall semester are organized in the following categories (themes). Click on the links below to read category descriptions. To register for workshops, go to the Online Calendar or Printable eFlyer.
Integrated Faculty Orientation (Fall Semester Only)
The second Integrated Faculty Orientation (IFO) for new faculty starting their career journey at the College occurs in late August and early September 2010. Workshops and consultations integrated through Employee Relations, the Centre for Educational and Information Technology, and the Centre for Academic and Faculty Development are designed to help new faculty get acquainted with teaching, learning and working at Douglas. Contract faculty can attend an early evening drop-in session to learn more about teaching and working at the College. Look for workshops marked "IFO".
Teaching, Learning, Curriculum & Assessment
Teaching, learning, curriculum and assessment are the "stuff" of faculty life, and include topics that affect faculty and students across disciplines and faculties.
Teaching and Learning with Technology
Technologies burgeon in post-secondary instruction. The new Faculty Development website includes links to a variety of teaching and learning resources that can be accessed online from a home or an office computer. Faculty Development sessions and reading circles also provide opportunities to learn more about teaching and learning with technology.
Teaching in the Multicultural Classroom
Many Douglas College students come from backgrounds where conceptions and practices of teaching and learning differ markedly from what might be found in our classrooms. Workshops and events in this category seek to address the question, "What do post-secondary instructors need to know and be able to do to work effectively in multicultural classrooms like ours?"
Reading Circles
Reading circles are small groups of College employees who meet weekly to discuss a good book. Regular reading circle participants receive a complimentary copy of the book and agree to facilitate discussion at one meeting. Though new members and drop in visitors are welcome at any point, the reading circles are most productive if people attend the full series.

Faculty Peer Mentoring
Peer FM is the Douglas College Faculty Peer Mentoring Program, where about 40 faculty members are involved in reciprocal mentoring partnerships. An orientation to Peer FM occurs at each campus early in the fall semester and the cohort of mentoring partners meets once per term.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Simply stated, the scholarship of teaching and learning focuses on research into classroom practice and student learning. "Problems" that occur in the classroom are turned into research questions and examined through the eye of scholarly inquiry. Small grants are available to people who undertake research on teaching and learning at Douglas. For more information, contact Alison Thomas thomasa@douglas.bc.ca.
Instructional Skills Workshops
Almost 200 Douglas College employees have taken our made-in-BC teaching and learning intensive called the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW). New, mid-career and seasoned employees alike have found the ISW a valuable experience that often results in ongoing collegial relationships.
Research and Scholarly Activity
Research and Scholarly Activity themes are designed to meet faculty needs at each stage of the research process from setting the question to dissemination. Sessions provide tips on designing research, finding funding, seeking ethics reviews, writing proposals, analyzing data, preparing academic posters, managing writing and publishing, and more. Participation is your ticket to an opportunity to network with other faculty with research interests and to help build a culture that supports research and scholarly activity at Douglas College. Workshops can be customized for small groups of faculty and individual sessions may also be available for some topics. See the RSA website for a complete listing of workshop titles and content as well as for access to online tutorials. Contact the RSA Coordinator at (5818) for details.
