Mission Statement:
The Centre for Sport, Recreation & Wellness exists to enhance the lives of Douglas College students, employees and members of the college community through sport, recreation, and wellness programs designed to develop mind, body, and spirit.


 

Goals and Objectives:
1. To provide an environment that welcomes and responds to the multicultural and diverse nature of our community and college by:
- Providing students, employees and community members with the opportunity to meet their personal/career goals and/or to pursue, with success, studies at other post-secondary institutions;
- Organizing summer camps for deaf students, aboriginal youth camps;
- Organizing summer camps/gym time for wheelchair sports;
- Organizing the Senior Citizens club (i.e., Priorize Your Fitness for Seniors programs);
- Continuing to work with the Summer Language Bursary Program by expanding summer camp programs;
- Continuing to organize boccia ball championships;
- Expanding Outdoor Education Programs; and
- Liaising with University Coaches for transfer ability

2. To provide an environment that encourages and celebrates individual initiative and responsibility by:
- Encouraging the growth of Sport Development Office,
- Wellness programs, and
- Partnerships with other organizations/departments/groups.

3. To provide appropriate student services and education programs for students with a wide diversity of age, background, experience, interests and special needs by:
- Continuing to use the CSRW website to celebrate student and employee successes;
- Continuing to work toward re-establishing a two-hour free block of time for the purpose of improving climate;
- Staffing the new assessment labs for fitness tests;
- Creating a study hall for student-athletes; and
- Continuing drug awareness sessions for student-athletes.

4. To provide added incentives for students to obtain a broad general education that will develop their capacities and creative talents and enable them to grow as human beings and good citizens of their community through:
- Varsity athletic programs,
- Sports Institute programs,
- Conferences of all types,
- Recreation programs,
- Elite Sport Development programs,
- Women-s only programming, and
- Student leadership programs in the community.

5. To make our programs, services, facilities and skilled leadership available to as many people as possible through:
- Progressive skill levels,
- Certification levels,
- Web delivery,
- Publications,
- Partnerships with private/municipal groups, and
- Partnerships with PSO-s/NSO-s.

6. To ensure that our programs and services are affordable to our students, employees, and community members by:
- Alternative funding,
- Partnerships,
- Subsidies,
- Performance Based Tuition Waivers,
- Endowments, and
- Fundraising.

7. To ensure that our programs and services have defined objectives and standards of excellence, and then evaluate them against their objectives and standards by:
- Adhering to the standards of external bodies,
- Evaluations,
- Performance appraisals,
- Qualified instructors/coaches, and
- Student Success (peer tutors, faculty advisors, study halls).

8. To provide ongoing learning opportunities, and encourage professional development and self-improvement of our employees by:
- Employee PD funds,
- NCCP courses,
- Sport First Aid Courses,
- Fitness Centre Courses, and
- Support in house professional development.

9. To co-operate with community organizations whose interests and activities are consistent with those of the college through:
- All programs.
