Blackboard is a Web-based set of Course Tools designed to deliver online learning. Blackboard was developed at the University of British Columbia and is used by universities and colleges world-wide. You may choose to use Blackboard to provide online resources or materials to enhance your traditional classroom teaching, provide a communications centre for various groups, engage students in interactive online discussions, provide interactive activities, move some or most of your content online, easily accept electronic assignment submissions from students, and much more.

Blackboard: Exploring the Possibilities

What is Blackboard and what does it do? Join us for this demonstration workshop that introduces the powerful potential of Blackboard. We will put Blackboard through its paces and show you examples of how others manage student information, provide instructional web pages, work with chat rooms and have set up discussion boards. This session will also outline the procedures for working with CEIT staff to work in Blackboard. Come and explore possibilities and bring the best to your students.

Prerequisites:

  • Interest and enthusiasm

Blackboard: Essentials I

Start from the beginning with a blank course shell. You'll add some communications and other tools, including a course outline. You'll also learn how to use the Discussion area effectively, and we'll explore other features. Bring some of your own material (such as a course outline, perhaps a lecture note handout, some of your favourite web site URLs or addresses).

Prerequisites:

  • Basic Windows skills, including web browser (Internet Explorer),
  • 9-digit employee number (Web-for-Faculty)

Blackboard: Essentials II

In this workshop, we'll introduce you to more of the technical and pedagogical skills necessary to work successfully and effectively online with Blackboard. You'll learn some strategies for promoting a lively online community, some Grade Book basics, set up some simple assignments for electronic submission, and control the release of content.

Prerequisites:

  • Essentials I (or equivalent),
  • 9-digit employee number (Web-for-Faculty)

Blackboard In-a-Day

Working your course shell, you'll add Communication and other tools, including your own course outline. Learn how to use Discussions for class or private group activities. You will be introduced to Blackboard's student grade book and will learn how to manage your students in this environment. We'll discuss some of the tricky issues of the on-line environment, and you can view some of the ideas your colleagues use. Add links to web sites and files, learn how to customize the space and much more!

Prerequisites:

  • 9-digit employee number (Web-for-Faculty)

Grade Book for myDouglas

If you use myDouglas to communicate with students, post some lecture notes and add some links, you can also provide confidential marks and grades to your students by using the Blackboard Grade Book. This one-hour session shows you Grade Book basics and how to easily enter student marks.

Electronic Submission of Student Submissions
New computers have no floppy disk drives. This workshop focuses on options for instructors who want their students to submit assignments electronically using either myDouglas or Blackboard (sign up for the appropriate session).

Prerequisites:

  • 9-digit employee number (Web-for-Faculty)

Blackboard: Three-day Intensive Workshop

This intensive workshop is specifically designed for people who have been introduced to Blackboard. You may have seen the great results your colleagues are getting and wondered how you could us it in your teaching. Bring some course material (in Word, PDF, or from the College H: drive), and we¿ll show you how you can put your course online. By the end of this intensive, your course will be ready for your students to access and begin working on projects, assignments, chats, and discussions. Just think only three days to a new interactive relationship with your students.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic Windows skills, including web browser (Internet Explorer)
  • Blackboard course space
  • Novell account
  • 9-digit employee number (Web-for-Faculty)
  • Access to H: drive or bring material that you would like to include in your fledgling course

In addition to the workshop series described on this site, CEIT also provides customized training for staff and faculty. Please contact our Help Desk.
