Financial aid

Financial aid

How will I receive my B. C. student loan once I have registered for classes?

  • Register in at least 9 credits of post-secondary level courses (Upgrading courses such as DVST, EASL, or courses that start with a zero, for example HUMD 0130, are not considered eligible for student loan). Courses you are repeating are not counted if you passed the course with a "P" or higher. Courses you are auditing are not considered eligible for student loan.
  • Pay your fees OR complete a Fee Deferral form (PDF). You can also access the fee deferral form on-line until April 16, 2012, via Credit Students Login, on the Application and Registration Services page.
  • Please ensure your program is correct on the Douglas College Registration Systerm and matches the program you indicated on your Student Loan. If your program has changed contact the Registrar's Office to update your program.

If your program on the student record system does not match the program you indicated on your student loan, it will delay your funding

    .

Student Loans for full-time students:
We recommend you apply by March 1, 2012 to receive your funding at the start of the semester. The final deadline for applications is six weeks before the end of the semester.

ABESAP for upgrading students:
Apply by April 16, 2012 in order to have your application processed before the fee payment deadline. If you apply after that date, you will need to pay your fees yourself and if you qualify for funding you will receive a refund of fees for your eligible courses. The final deadline for applications is May 28, 2012. Please note, funds are limited.

Part time funding - Apply early as processing time is 6 to 8 weeks. The final deadline for applications is June 15, 2012.

Bursary applications

Applications are open between May 1 and June 1, 2012 via the Credit Students Login on the Application & Registration Services page.

Do you qualify for a fee deferral?

If you have been approved for student loan funding and have received a Notification of Assessment from StudentAidBC, you qualify for a fee deferral.

If you have been approved for student loan funding, please complete the Request for a Fee Deferral (PDF), or complete the fee deferral application on-line until April 16, 2012 via Credit Students Login on the Application & Registration Services page.

If you complete the Fee Deferral (PDF), the completed form, along with the Notification of Assessment, must be received no later than 1600 hours, April 23, 2012. In order to avoid long lineups, if you receive your Notification of Assessment before the final deadline, please submit your Fee Deferral Request package immediately to:

Cashier's Office, Douglas College
PO Box 2503, New Westminster, BC V3L 5B2

Normal fee payment deadlines also apply to students who are submitting completed Fee Deferral forms (PDF) for fee payment. If these deadlines are not met, students may be deregistered from classes without notice.

Please note that you must enroll in a minimum 60% course load (i.e. nine credits) in order to qualify for student loan funding. Courses that start with a zero (0) are not eligible for student loan funding and can not be counted toward the nine (9) credit minimum course load. Repeated courses are not counted if you passed the course (P or higher). Courses that you are auditing are not counted as part of your 60% course load.

Out-of-Province students

If you have been approved for a student loan or grant funding through another province or territory (e.g. Yukon grant), you qualify for a fee deferral. Complete the Request for a Fee Deferral (PDF) or on-line via the Credit Students Login (on the Application & Registration Services page) until April 16, 2012. Drop off your completed fee deferral form and proof of funding no later than 1600 hours, April 23, 2012 at:

Cashier's Office, Douglas College
PO Box 2503, New Westminster, BC V3L 5B2

If you complete the on-line fee deferral application, you must immediately forward proof of funding by fax 604-527-5551 or drop off at the Financial Aid office.

Normal fee payment deadlines also apply to students who are submitting completed Fee Deferral forms for fee payment. If these deadlines are not met, students will be deregistered from classes without notice.

NOTE: If you submit a Fee Deferral and subsequently decide not to attend one or more of your courses for any reason or if you are subsequently disqualified at any time after the fee payment deadline, you must drop your courses yourself. You will be assessed all penalties as though fees were paid by cash.

One application is used for the following programs:

  • Supplemental bursary for students with disabilities
  • Canada student loan for part-time students
