Student Services Video Tour

Sarah Canero says hosting the Student Services video gave her a chance to exercise her improv skills, while gaining some valuable on-camera experience for her demo tape.

Now you can navigate the corridors of Student Services at Douglas College, complete with a tour guide, without being on campus.

A new interactive video on the Douglas website has been launched to better acquaint students with the College's services and how they can access them online or in person.

Host Sarah Canero is in her first year of the Theatre Program at Douglas. She scored the paid gig hosting the video after auditioning, along with a few of her classmates.

Canero says it was a good opportunity to use her improvisational skills.

"I honestly didn't know what to expect, except for the fact I would be doing a lot of work and pushing the boundaries of my capability to really listen and give the directors what they wanted," she says.

The scope of the video is broad, says Ted James, Director of Student and Enrolment Services/Registrar at Douglas College.

"We wanted to reach out and lead students to where they can get help - whether for academic, personal, or social reasons," says James.

An online guide was the perfect fit, he adds.

"We needed a lively and engaging series of vignettes about each service and using HuStream's format was a natural choice. It's interactive, high quality and fun," James explains.

He is thrilled with Canero's performance and notes that the end product is "even better than anticipated."

Canero says it was a rewarding experience. "I think having some experience being filmed will help me a lot, especially because nowadays, people want a video reel of something you've done for auditions."

But more than that, she says it has also helped her get to know more people on campus.

"It's a great feeling walking down the hallways of the college and being recognized as some kind of 'movie star' or even just being able to say 'Hi' to a lot of the staff."
