I had a vision

I originally wanted to be an optometrist. I did some pre-optometry at university but quickly realized it wasn't for me. I like working with my hands and creating something. Opticianry seemed like a better fit. I researched some courses on-line (I am originally from Regina, Sask.) and found the Dispensing Optician Program at Douglas College.

Size matters

The best thing about college was the small class sizes. "It really allowed to me to know the teachers and make some great friends. "

Hands-on experience

The craziest moment in class was in the Contact Lens program. The day we had to start putting lenses in each other's eyes, there were some people who were looking pretty scared.

Learning on the job

Working in the field, I got to hone my practical skills, learn how to sell and to deal with customers and conflict.

Being my own boss

The best part is being able to work 'on' the business as well as work 'in' it.  The potential for the business to grow is only limited by my ambition.

The biggest challenge

Keeping balance in my life. It's always a challenge to allow myself to relax - it's very easy to get wrapped up in the store.  I'm working on it though.
