Between classes: Bonnie Gladman
Health Care Support Worker
Bonnie Gladman
is a test speed demon
Education:
Resident Care Attendant, 2004 (now the Health Care Support Worker Program)
Current job:
Care Aide Supervisor, Pro Vita Management at Windermere Care Centre, Vancouver.
Future goals:
My ultimate goal one day is to have and run my own care home. I'd build a house in the country (or kick my parents out of ours) and turn it into a state-of-the-art care home where the best care will be provided. I will make my residents' last day, month or year the best they ever had.
About me:
The first thing I do every morning is thank the Lord for another day!
When I hang out with my friends we love to laugh at ourselves and at each other but mostly at each other.
I picked Douglas because
I was told that it was the top school in the Lower Mainland for the program. I wanted to get the best education so I would be well informed with the proper skills to best care for my community.
The best thing about college was
learning the tools to do my God-given purpose on this Earth: be a care aide.
The most important thing I learned was
I love being a care aide. I love that I can care for the basic needs of others who can't care for themselves. There is so much more than basic needs that I can offer the elderly.
My craziest moment in class
was racing to see if I could finish the test first just to see if I could do it. I don't think you're supposed to do that but I won. Just nobody else knew the race was on!
The biggest lesson I've learned outside school
is that if you don't have outlets outside of work to draw on for encouragement and support in a job where you're constantly giving of yourself, you'll crash and burn quite quickly.
My residents have taught me
to really enjoy life and that a simple smile or a few moments to sit down and talk can go a long way. They teach me that there is so much more to life than work- there's making a difference in the lives of people around you!
