Global insights brings new skills
Shawna Palmquist, Community Social Service Worker (CSSW) program grad
Shawna Palmquist, a Community Social Service Worker (CSSW) program grad, knows that the lessons learned in other countries can help people around the world.
Palmquist currently works as a front line social service worker, providing support to women with mental health, abuse and addiction issues. She says she learned her lessons from a CSSW practicum in Africa.
"Going to Uganda has confirmed that I am on the right career path. I feel as though this program has given me the practical experience I needed to get a job compared to the textbook learning that a degree program would have given me," says Palmquist.
She credits the importance of gaining knowledge from other countries as the key to becoming a better practitioner.
"I gained the knowledge of not only what it is like to work in a foreign county, but how to be more creative. Too often we lose our creativity and get into a rut. In Uganda, we had to make do with what we had and brainstorm for ideas that fit a wide range of clients."
For Palmquist, her ability to brainstorm was enhanced as a result of the strong foundation she built in the two-year CSSW diploma program.
"The thing I remember most about the program is all the hands on work we did. The teachings weren't just from text books and for me that's is one of the best ways I learn. The teaching was thorough and the courses gave students insight into what part of social services they wanted to focus on," says Palmquist.
For Palmquist, that means options to many different sectors.
"What I love about my career path is that it provides many opportunities to do a wide variety of things. I can work with youth, families and elderly. If I want to try something new, I can, without having to get another degree. I'd even like to go back to Uganda someday."
Her advice for others wanting to follow her path is simple and enthusiastic.
"Do it! The program is challenging and you need to be ready for a lot of personal growth but it is one of the best things I've ever done. There are tons of opportunities for different experiences within the program and it all leads to a great earning potential."
